NHS Work FAQs

What if I have the Symptoms of Swine Flu and feel unwell?
Please do not come to the surgery as this will just spread the virus if you do have it. You can contact the surgery on the usual number and the receptionist will add you to the doctors phone call list. A doctor or nurse will then contact you and speak to you to establish the next course of action.

Can I text the surgery with a query?
Yes, you can text the surgery on 0780 000 9668 and we will respond to you within 24 hours (Monday to Friday), We can only respond to the mobile phone that we receive the text from.

Why can’t I order my prescription over the phone?
We cannot take requests for prescriptions over the phone in case any errors are made. Drugs have similar names and many different doses and it is simply for patient safety that we must have everything in writing.

I need to see a doctor urgently. How soon is the next appointment?

Generally you should be able to see a doctor within 24hours hours unless requiring a specific doctor. If it is an emergency we have same day appointments for those people who require an appointment more urgently. We offer a service where if unable to get an appointment and you think your problem could be dealt with via a phone call the duty doctor will call you back at home during the morning with advice. Again this may be not be your doctor of choice as they may have a surgery that day but the duty doctor will be able to help.

I have run out of my medication can I have a prescription straight away?

It is important that you keep track of your medication so the doctors to have enough time to check your request, issue and sign the prescription. Generally we ask for 48 hours to process a prescription however if it is a genuine emergency the doctor will issue a prescription at his or her discretion.

Why can I not get an appointment in the next two days with my preferred doctor?

The availability for specific doctors may vary as some surgeries are busier than others. In the event of being unable to see your preferred doctor you can still make an appointment with another GP as all your history is stored on the computer anyway. It may then be possible to make a follow up appointment if necessary with the doctor of your choice.

Why must I go to the hospital for my blood test?
There are limited appointments for the practice nurses to take blood at the surgery and we try to keep these for the elderly and people who find it difficult to get to the hospital. York District Hospital runs a clinic between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday and ASDA also run a blood taking service at their store at Monks Cross retail park from 8.30am to 4.40pm Monday to Thursday and 8.30am to 3pm on Friday.

I am at work all day can I get a late appointment?
We now offer appointments in an evening on Mondays and Tuesdays to accomodate people who cannot get during the day. Tang Hall Lane Surgery is open until 8.00pm on Mondays and Park View Surgery is open until 8.00pm on Tuesdays. The doctors operate the evening surgeries on  a rota basis and therefore we cannot guarantee which doctor you will be able to see. These appointments can be booked online or by phoning the surgery.

I forgot that I had an appointment can you remind me about it?
If you let us have your mobile phone number we can text you 24 hours before your appointment to give you a reminder.

Why can I not book a nurse appointment on-line the same as I do the doctor?
We are making some changes to the software that runs our on-line system and this will mean that from September 2009 some nurse appointments will be available to book on-line.

What should I do if I have some medication that I no longer need?
You can either take this to the local pharmacy for disposal or bring in to the surgery where we can also do this for you.

I want to use the automated telephone system to make an appointment. How easy is this?
The system is very easy and the voice message will guide you through what to do. You will need to have a touch tone phone, which most people have nowadays.

Do I need to register or sign up to use the automated telephone booking system?
No, the system recognises you by your date of birth and a telephone number. This can be either a land line or a mobile.

The automated telephone system says that it cannot verify my details. What does this mean?
This means that the date of birth and telephone number that you have entered does not match any person that we have in our clinical database. The system will allow you to leave us a message so that your details can be updated on the next working day. This means that you will then be able to use the automated system.
