Patients with Type 2 diabetes treated with diet and tablets are reviewed at the surgery twice a year or more often as necessary.
Patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes treated with insulin are seen at the surgery once a year and managed by the diabetic centre at York hospital for their insulin management.

Symptoms of diabetes are:
• Excessive thirst
• Wee-ing a lot more than usual, especially at night
• Extreme tiredness
• Weight loss
• Blurred vision
• Genital itching and regular episodes of thrush
• Slow healing wounds
Other risk factors are:
• Being over 40 years old
• Having a close family member with diabetes
• Being overweight
• Being of Asian origin
• Women with history of gestational diabetes during their pregnancies
